Winter Coats: Save or Steal?

As I've mentioned before on this blog I am completely obsessed with finding a new winter coat. Not just because I feel like it because I don't have one.

Realistically I know that a well made coat is worth investing in but the simple truth is I am broke. And cold. So in my search for cheapie outerwear I dug up the following "Save or Steal" options:

I told you about this J. Crew coat (left) before and I still think it's pretty neato but it's still near the $400 range. The Delia's coat (right)is $69.50 as is or $89.50 with thinsulate.

I love the idea of a bright magenta wool coat in a season where things get to get cold, dark, and drab. The Anne Klein coat on the left is so fab - to the tune of $350. Its Delia's counterpart is only $79.50.

I love the chic detailing of the Mackage on the left - sadly I don't have $600 burning a hole in my pocket. Enter Delia's once again. This Tristan Peacoat rings in at $89.50 leaving plenty of spare change left over for a cute hat and gloves.

I'm broke too! and need a winter coat, but I will still spring for the investment coat. You'll end up spending more in the long run because the cheaper coat will probably only last you one season, as they are not very well made. What I'm going to to do is buy a last season Mackage coat on sale. They're classic coats anyway!

i adore the jcrew/delias options...just make sure to feel the fabric before going for the cheaper version. there's nothing worse than a scratchy coat!

i have to admit - i actually prefer the fuschia coat from delias...though i'm shocked by that! i also think that gorgeous violet peacoat is a fantastic option - i could see the hue looking a little dated next year, so i love the idea of buying the bargain version to tide you over!

awesome finds!

I'm all for saving money, but when it comes to coats, I consider them to be "true investment" pieces. I've found the best way to score a high quality designer coat is to shop at an upscale consignment boutique. As the owner of such a consignment boutique, I've bought and sold several designer coats at prices well over 80% off the retail cost.

They've all got their good points. I feel your pain on the money, but I worry about saying "go for the steal." Steals usually are not as warm, and don't last as long. I'd vote to go for quality if at all possible.

I love these coats! The purple JCrew one is lovely... but come on, 400 dollars? I'll be bored with it next year. I love the black one by Delia's!!

Delia's always has our back. But i live nowhere near one. The closest is miles away and I can't drive as yet =/

love your steals. the colors are tres fab for this season. Since colors are very trendy, I'd only splurge on a black/gray/navy/cream coat, but for the colorful or trendy shaped ones, steals all the way ;)

Just an FYI, my friend bought the first Delia*s coat you listed and says it looks like it was sewn together by drunk monkeys.
