Put On A Happy Face

The good folks at VB Cosmetics recently sent me a jar of their Hydrodynamic Facial Masque, a moisturizing herbal treatment that nourishes and nurtures dry skin. It's chock full of essential botanical oils like eucalyptus, geranium, lavender, cedarwood, orange and jasmine - so it's got that great woodsy-herbal scent that I totally love.

I'm a bit of a skin care/mask junkie so I was eager to get the spa experience without the spa price tag - and this marvi mask was just the ticket I was looking for.

After about 20 minutes my skin felt noticeably more fresh, and dare I say, dewy. A definite must add to my skin care arsenal.

At a scant $22 for a 1.9 oz jar it's a total bargain. Treat yourself to a little r-n-r this holiday season and sneak away for a some 30 minute "me time" with any of Abrione's line. It's my present to you. Enjoy!

Trends Report: Easy As A, B, C, or DD

If you’re like most women, you are in the wrong size bra. Over 80% of us wear ill-fitting bras – that means backaches and a distorted shape that gives you lumps and bumps in all the wrong places. The right size bra is like an instant body lift so don’t be shy – seek out the help of an experienced sales person and get measured.

Position. Your breasts should be positioned halfway between your shoulders and your elbows – to achieve this; your bra must be level, front to back. Re-think your band size – try a smaller band and larger cups. If you wear your band high in the back, it throws off your proportions and adds stress to your shoulders. Wearing your strap lower will also eliminate the dreaded appearance of back fat, something that women of all sizes experience. To diminish jiggle, your band should rest against the breastbone without any tension.

Straps. Contrary to popular belief, a bra’s major support comes from the band, not the straps. If yours tend to fall then chances are your band is riding up and is too large for your frame. Go down one size. To avoid painful digging, opt for wider straps or look for “Shoulder Savers” which are removable and provide cushioning.

Cups. If you are small busted, a demi-cup bra pads the sides and gives a flattering lift and enhanced neckline. Larger busted women need underwire or back straps for better shape – consider a racer back style for added support. Avoid lacy or embellished styles that add bulk and opt for seamless varieties for a smooth sleek appearance.

Luxe Leather For Up To 70% Off!

Photobucket

The right belt can make or break your outfit - that's why I was psyched to find some must have pieces from Linea Pelle on Couture Candy's Label Spree site for up to 70% off.

These luxurious leather beauties usually retail in the $200 range so take advantage of the deals now before they disappear!

The Perfect Holiday Outfit To Wear In.

Photobucket

The "staycation" trend started earlier this year and I suspect that many more folks will celebrate this season's holidays quietly at home with close family and friends rather than gas up the guzzler or fly to far flung places.

I love this look from CUSP for several reasons, but mainly because it is the perfect low-key luxe outfit for such affairs. The silky charmeuse dress in a rich floral pattern by Rory Beca is easily dressed up or down with the right accessories - while the surrealist heels add the quirky touch that always gets me.

Dancing With The Stars, Sort Of

Okay, so it's not fashion or beauty related but I couldn't resist posting this pic first thing Monday morning to start this shortened holiday week with a laugh.

They've got some mad skills. Love the aqua feathers.

Enjoy!

Street Beat: Midwest Jess - Patriotic Style

Jessica Schroeder knows a thing or two about making trends her own. A quick look at her blog and you’ll find them all: winter florals, plaid, colored tights, and oversized sunnies to name a few. The Midwestern native’s keen sense of style comes from taking risks that pay off brilliantly.

Her inspiration outfit; a spin on patriotic chic, pairs a black stars and stripes scarf with a navy peacoat – Jessica thumbs her nose at the notoriously no-no combo of black and navy for an unabashedly individualist style statement. The wide leg flairs and caramel colored accessories add an early ‘70s Love Story inspired flair.

Have You Been To French Connection Recently?

A friend of mine asked me to help her find a cute cover up for a special event, so I took to the internet tubes in search of a shrug or cardi that she could wear long after her soiree was over.

This serendipitous event led me to French Connection which I inexplicably haven't shopped or thought about in nearly 10 years.

Imagine my surprise at all of the stylish goodness contained within their virtual walls. I adore this chunky Arabian knit sweater - perfect with leggings and slouchy boots - I will wear it all winter long.

Ditto this elegant black wool coat and curiously named wonder dress.

Sign Of The Times, From The Post

Here's an assignment for you: kindly read this short blurb from Page Six and sound off.

I'm not sure what ticks me off the most:

1) the crummy economy
2) women who make their husbands do the "dirty" work
3) that the NY Post sees fit to set us back a hundred years with snarky anti-grrl rants.

Comments?!

Trends Report: I See London, I See France: Spring 2009 Sneak Preview

Photobucket

One of the overall themes that emerged from the Spring 2009 Runway is that skin is in. For better or worse, über short lengths and skin-exposing cutouts made street wear look more like swimwear. Uncomfortably confronted with TMI we got to work interpreting the trend PDQ to make it more wearable:

· Wear leggings or tights, even with shorts (a trend from the street)

· Look for long blazers that cover your bum, but opt for slim-fitting cuts to keep it sleek

· An oversized vest is a good way to cover up and add layers of personal style; think asymmetrical hems, collars, or embellishments that say “you”

· Still not convinced? Ditch it – not all trends are workable; choose what’s right for you.

J. Crew's 50% Off Fall Sale

When my last order snafu with J. Crew happened this summer I vowed to never shop with them online ever again.

Well, a few months, heated phone calls, and emails later I'm about to eat my words...

...their Fall sale has started and there's just so much to love that I'm willing to overlook it this time in the interest of bagging some bargains.

Isn't this warm marigold schoolgirl skirt just darling? It's marked down from $175 to $79.

Don't agree and want to find your own goodies? Check out the sale here.

Cashmere. Cardigans. Hurry!

Photobucket

Have you la la'd yet?

Ooh, my sweet if you haven't you really must. I'm thrilled to see that Vince is being featured on the site today - their cashmere cardi's are available for 40 - 50% off - - yes even CURRENT collection stuff like the long slim ombre number that I've coveted since June.

What's that you say, you've never been to Rue La La, the online sample sale extravaganza that features designers like Prada, Gucci, Tahari, etc? That's okay, you need to know people to get in...but you know me! Drop me a line at kim at alwaysinstyle dot com and I'll send you an invite.

But hurry, quantities are limited and selling out fast!

Ciao Ragazza!

Though it's cold and dark in NYC this morning I am feeling suprisingly light-hearted thanks to latest from Diane Von Furstenberg's Resort Collection now available at Saks.

As you'd expect it's filled with fun prints and flattering silhouettes. My favorite piece is this "Ragazza" dress which means girl or girlfriend in Italian. I want to buy it right now. Then book the first flight to Palermo for a little divertimento, Sicilian style.

Mmmm...I can practically taste the sweet citrus and almond delicacies now....

...but before I wonder off completely be sure to visit the collection online for a chance to win a DVF wrap dress and a gorgeous piece of luggage to send you on your way.

Age Appropriate - Please Don't Dress Like A 7 Year Old

Is it me or is this Marc by Marc Jacobs cotton twill bow dress just wildly inappropriate for anyone, say, over the age of seven? Even the models look confused and mildly embarrassed.

Our next stop in the style universe takes us to Los Angeles where Ev'Yan, better known as Apricot Tea to her blogging buds, proves that understated elegance doesn’t have to mean classic and dull. She describes herself as frugal, old-fashioned and fashion-oriented. We say she gives the notion of thrift a much-needed update: from sensible to sensational.

The artist and writer favors a palette of neutrals accented with eye-catching accessories: a graphic scarf, a multi-tiered chain, retro fabulous Rayban Wayfarers. We adore her pixie hair cut and chic makeup -- she's the ultimate girly sophisticate.

Red Carpet Style - Glamour 2008 Women Of The Year

I realize I'm a wee bit late in posting these pics but better late than never, esp. when it comes to these women, who in my opinion were the best dressed of the evening:

Photobucket

America Ferrera, my favorite all the way in what I believe is an Oscar de la Renta extravaganza.

Photobucket

Kate Bosworth looking polished to perfection - not sure who the designer is but I like it.

Photobucket

Natalie Portman always looks stunning on the red carpet. I love the sequin panel and unusual hemline.

Photobucket

Taylor Swift looking fabulous in basic black, this dress looks so comfy you could probably sleep in it.

Photobucket

Tyra works her curves brilliantly. Looks like Donna Karan or Ralph Lauren, anyone know for sure?

And I can't resist throwing in a couple of duds:

Photobucket

Everyone raved about Nicole Kidman's dress which to me looks like some cheap bridal number from Penneys. Seriously, what's with the organza bow on her arm?

Photobucket

Oof, frumpalicious. Both of them.

Michelle's Bling

I find it very amusing that people are STILL talking about Michelle Obama's Election Victory rally dress one week later.

I mean even my guy friends are discussing the issue with such passion it's disconcerting.

Most folks seem to disagree with my assessment but please do tell...if you hated the dress...what about these fabulously regal yet rock and roll Loree Rodkin earrings?

Anyone?

Oh Christian Louboutin - Why?

At the risk of losing what little style cred I have I'd like to go on record as saying, "What the blank...Loubie?"

I just don't get it. Fringe - good. Suede - better. Louboutin - great.

This thing? Not so much.

Those who disagree kindly explain why I should plunk down $1800 for these?

Born To Be Wild, Newport News Style

I'm always blown away by the amazing deals on Newport News. This jewel-toned motorcycle jacket is no exception.

It's available in black, red, purple, and a stunning emerald green.

Best of all, it's only $39 so I can actually afford it too -- yippeeeee!

Trends Report: Eye Love Beauty - Age Appropriate Eye Makeup Application

When Mom told you to “act your age,” she left out the bit about not looking it. When it comes to eye makeup, there are some key tips to remember for dazzling eyes that don’t reveal how many candles decorate your cake.

Teens/20s. At this age you can really go out on a trendy limb: go for glittery shadows in bold colors and exotic color combinations. Keep it chic by passing on eyeliner and opt for a lash-lengthening mascara to frame the eye.

30s. Create a dramatic impact with a liquid liner applied to the upper lash line that extends to the outer corners in a delicate wing. Cream shadows are a good choice for a natural look, and for a little more pop, apply a bit of shimmer under the brow and at the inner corners.

40s/50s. Focus on your brows, which tend to get sparse with age. Apply a brow powder with a stiff, angled brush, using feather-like strokes for the most natural look. Use a pearly shadow below the brow bone to highlight.

60s plus. Creating a flawless eye starts with the right foundation – always use a primer to even out skin tone. Set with powder and line the upper lashes with a liquid liner, and top off with a waterproof mascara in your best shade.

Taking Care Of Business

I'm fortunate that my job doesn't require a traditional Working Girl wardrobe. Coming of age in this heady time of shoulder pads, big hair, and Reeboks with scrunchy socks over your L'Eggs pantyhose, I can't help but cringe a little whenever I walk by the career section of my local department store.

But like everything else from the '80s career wear has gone chic...and cheap too. If you're like many out there pounding the pavement for a new job you'll need a interview outfit that means business. I found these options at Smart Bargains all for just $75!

Help Me Decide: DIY Fendi, Hot or Not?

Don't get me wrong...I love a DIY project as much as the next gal but something just doesn't sit right with me on this one.

Behold, the Paint Your Own Fendi Baguette from eLuxury. Yes folks, for $1300 smackers you too can get a coated canvas bag and a set of 10 Pantone Universe markers to scribble your way for all fashionable posterity.

$1300 bucks really? Are there socialites out there who become so unhinged by the thought of setting foot in a craft or thrift store that they need to spring for a homemade Fendi to flaunt their mad art skills?

Actually, the funniest part about this is the disclaimer on the ad: "only returnable in original condition." Yeah, I suppose "I Heart Dexter" in scripty curly-que font and glitter accents has a very limited audience.

Please help me decide, the DIY Fendi Baguette, hot or not?

Holiday Gift Guide: My Budget Pick Of The Day

Sure, I've still got a jar of Halloween candy corn calcifying on my desk right now but it's never too early to start thinking about shopping for holidays.

With this season being a particular tough financial time for many folks setting a budget is paramount. As a result, you're going to start seeing lots of wallet-friendly alternatives coming from yours truly to help prevent credit card statement hangovers (you're on your own for the supermarket eggnog induced varieties sweetie pies).

When this book landed on my desk I knew instantly that it was a keeper.

Cosmo's Sexiest Beauty Secrets: The Ultimate Guide To Looking Gorgeous is a Must-Have reference for all of the beauty addicts in your life. It's beautifully illustrated and chock full of tips and insider tricks for getting gorgeous. My personal favorite is the section of home spa treatments: I still needs to get pampered, dagnabit, yet save some dough in the process - mission accomplished with the easy recipes included.

It retails for $19.95 but Amazon has them available for $12.49 - at that price you can't afford not to buy a copy for your best pal and yourself too!

What I Want Right Now - Denim of Virtue @ 30% Off

Though I own roughly a kajillion pair of jeans I can't help but lust over these Grace Loop Pocket Flare Jeans from Denim of Virtue.

The L.A. based brand were the first to jump on the colored jean bandwagon and have graced the backsides of Fergie, Christina Aguilera, and Jessica Alba to name a few.

I love the classic blue rinse of this pair, and even at the full price of $190 it's a worthwhile investment to get my caboose looking this good. Fortunately, Couture Candy has made them one of their discounts of the day (along with Walter, Autumn Cashmere, and Seven For All Mankind) so it's a no-brainer.

Get 30% off with code 30Day at checkout - but hurry - this discount expires at Midnight tonight.

Mom Was Right: Eat Your Veggies

...or at least slather them all over your face for good skin.

The latest additions to the Yes To Carrots natural skin care line are Yes to Cucumbers and Yes To Tomatoes. Aside from being the key ingredients to a yummy salad these latest additions to the pharmacy brand favorite are perfect for Sensitive and Acne prone skin.

As you may know, tomatoes are prized for their high Lycopene content - an anti-oxidant which is excellent at fighting free-radicals and preserving healthy skin cells. It's also an anti-inflammatory which is ideal in treating sensitive skin conditions like acne or rosacea. Cucumbers, on the other hand, are known for their cooling properties that help keep skin supple and fresh. Its rejuvenating vitamins softens skin for a smooth appearance - making it a wonderful ingredient for Normal to Sensitive skin types.

If the natural veggies aren't enough to make you hungry to try them, consider the additional ingredients that make these lines so beneficial: spirulina, an algae with high amounts of protein, green and red tea, both potent anti-oxidants, and Dead Sea Mud & Minerals which cleanse, detoxify, and mineralize the skin naturally. They're also purported to help improve cell metabolism, and stabilize the skin's moisture content which results in nourished glowing skin.

As a total skin care junkie I eagerly dove into the 'mater and cuke assortment and the results were very satisfying. The Tomato Facial Wash and Cucumber Mask left my skin feeling very clean and healthy without that tight feeling normally associated with products for oily skin while the Cucumber and Aloe Body Gel left me feeling all tingly refreshed. I ended my little spa pampering treatment with the Tomato Tender Touch hand cream and settled in with a good book and a restful evening.

Find them at your local pharmacy or online here.

Michelle Obama Rocks The Blue Carpet

Photobucket

(photo via NY Mag)

Since this is a company blog, tossing around political opinions is understandably frowned upon...but that doesn't preclude me from raving about our "First Lady Elect" Michelle Obama's winning style on the blue carpet.

Resplendent in a silky custom Narcisco Rodriguez creation from his Spring 2009 collection, she took a runway look and made it totally wearable: kissing the sheer crotch goodbye (as if anyone would want that...um...ever?), opting for a more conservative neckline, and making it her own with fab earrings and yes, that tiny cardi which may not have been the most stylish choice but certainly made sense for a chilly Chicago evening. I like the criss-cross affect at the waist which I think works for her Bodyline as well.

Reviews have been mixed from the blogosphere so I encourage you all to chime in with your style verdict!

#1 On My Holiday Wishlist: Vivienne Tam Notebook Clutch: UPDATE!

Remember not so long ago when I fell head over heels for this chic clutch, I mean, notebook?

Well Santa baby, I've been awfully good this year so just keep that in mind when shooting off that All Staff memo to the elves.

Due to the huge demand from similarly obsessed stylistas, the good folks at HP have stepped up their game and are offering the chance to reserve it just in time for the holidays.

To get yourself on the reservation list, or to enter for a chance to win one, click here.

I'm A Lumberjack And I'm Okay...

Major cuteness alert folks:

One of my fave trends this season is plaid. There are so many ways to "make it work" from English countryside chic, à la Ralph Lauren, or retro fabulous com'e Dolce and Gabbana per esempio.

Another chic alternative? This buffalo plaid check in a bright cobalt. It's like something I would've worn circa 1990 curled up in front of the tube for my beloved Northern Exposure.

Though I can't bring back the highly missed series, I can channel Maggie O'Connell's outdoorsy girl look with this sweet jacket from Le Robo.

Trends Report: Frugal Fashionista

A sluggish economy calls for a little belt-tightening, but just because the belt isn’t Gucci doesn’t mean it should be any less glamorous. Not long ago, you wouldn’t dare utter the words “frugal” and “style” in the same sentence – fortunately, that isn’t the case any longer. The positive side of an economic slow-down is that it forces us to be more creative with our resources…it also means there are plenty of deals to be found.

Wallet-Friendly Shopping Tips:

  • Heading out to the mall? Ditch the plastic and bring an envelope of cash with a small amount and stick to it. When you’re outta money, get outta there.
  • Multi-Task. Look for pieces that can be dressed up or down and easily layered or accessorized. A classic sheath is a prime example, and there are plentiful options under $50.
  • Inexpensive accessories breathe new life into your wardrobe: a patent bag, for example, is dressy enough for a special occasion, yet adds a funky twist to your everyday denim.
  • Want to look like movie star without a starlet’s budget? Draw inspiration from the web: there are tons of personal style blogs that interpret red carpet and runway looks into real life reality – including our own.

Ta Da...The Results Are In.

Thanks to all who participated in my splurge or save game from this morning.

Bet you couldn't wait to find out the details...I know I couldn't believe my eyes when I found out what they were:

Photobucket

First up is the "save" option, the BCBG Petler boot is a mere bag of shells, in other words, a sensibly priced $179. Find it at Endless.

Photobucket

The second lust-worthy option? Loeffler Randall's Matilde boot which rings up at $695. If you've got the spare change laying around snag it at Shopbop.

So my next question is...do these prices sway your decision about which one you'd like?!

How Festive!

Photobucket

I normally don't post home or decorating related items but my heart just died a little when I saw these Fun and Festive Holiday Popmats.

Maybe it's because I'm feeling a little nostalgic today, what with my Billboard Hits from the '70s blaring in my headphones, but I really adore these 3 dimensional placements. They're a pleasant reminder of the holiday craft projects of my youth, sans glitter and paste. Designs include a reindeer, a fireplace with all the trimmings and a holiday table, complete with mini turkey.

They're a surprisingly affordable $24.75 for a set of 10, and aside from their extreme cuteness, they're made of 100% recycled paper, so they're eco-friendly.

As an added bonus, they're sure to be conversation starters...a good way to avoid a tête-à-tête with your drunk Uncle Larry or explain to mom why you're still childless at the ripe old age of 25.

Find them on Delight.com

Splurge or Save: Which Boot Do You Want?

PhotobucketPhotobucket

Happy Monday kiddies!

Let's play a game. Can you tell me which of these tall drinks of amber deliciousness is the splurge and which is the save?

Bonus points if you can name the designers.

You won't win anything other than my unwavering admiration and a chance to flaunt your mad shopping skills.

Let's hear it...I'll post the details about both later.
