Trends Report: Never Let 'Em See You Sweat

Don’t get us wrong: sure we love the beach, and gladiator sandals have been just what the style doctor ordered, but quite frankly we’re a little tired of the funk factor. Not sure what we mean? Pop into your local subway station in the mid-day August sun…yep, it’s hot out there and, some of us exceed our expiration date before others. Make sure you’re as fresh as a rose by day’s end…and never let them see you sweat!

Keep underarms dry. Deodorant and antiperspirant is obviously a good start, but how do you know what the difference is between natural deodorants versus mainstream brands? Ingredients. Traditional synthetic varieties contain chemicals such as triclosan to fight bacteria, plus preservatives like parabens to prolong shelf life. Natural alternatives contain herbs and essential oils like rosemary and sage, as well as natural aluminum, all of which are drying agents and kill the offending bacteria. One isn’t necessarily better than the other, so choose what feels right to you. Additionally, you can get a jump start in the shower with soap or body wash that contain natural deodorizers like green tea, peppermint, or lavender.

Clothing. Fabrics that wick moisture away from the body are often used in active wear garments that are so stylish it’s hard to distinguish them from your “street” clothes. Look for key words like “Coolmax ®” “Supplex ®” or “Dri-Balance™.” Wear protective shields under your armpits to soak up excess sweat and odors – there are specially-manufactured pads, or try panty shields, which, although it may seem odd, work just as well. An added bonus is that you’ll save on dry cleaning bills and prolong the life of your threads.

Shoes. Just because tootsies are in open sandals doesn’t mean they don’t sweat. To prevent mucking up your Manolos, use foot powders that contain baking soda to absorb wetness and help prevent blisters. Rub peppermint oil on your feet before bed to keep your feet soft and fresh.
