2008 Emmys: The Best & Worst On The Red Carpet

I didn't get the chance to catch the 2008 Emmy awards last night, but this morning's red carpet recap has me wishing I had.

It seems the undisputed favorite of the night was Heidi Klum - but sorry - I would have to disagree. Here are my picks:



Brooke Shields looks brilliant in softly flowing fuchsia.



Mariska Hargitay in a stunning yellow frock that complements her in every way.



Marcia Cross in a gorgeous vintage inspired gown - very shabby chic/Paris Apt.



Kyra Sedgwick looks amazing in this dress, very Art Deco glam and super sexy. Her makeup and hair just catapults the whole look into perfection.



Who knew Tina Fey had such rocking curves? Love it!



Simple and chic. Cynthia Nixon looks fabulous!



The biggest DUD of the night: Jennifer Love Hewitt in a I-Can't-Believe-That's-A-Carolina-Herrera-Dress. And that hair? Oof!

Which Gossip Girl "Little J" Look Do You Prefer?

New York Magazine recently called 15 year old Taylor Momsen's style transformation from girly to Goth "shocking".

I'm not entirely convinced.

I can't count on both hands the number of transformations I had before I reached sweet 16. What do you think? Is Taylor's edgier look inappropriate for a girl her age or are you loving Little J's Joan Jett-style makeover?

Red Carpet De Do Do Do’s

Sorry folks, I never met an ‘80s pop culture reference I didn't like. On to more pressing subject matters, like who rocked the red carpet best at the Cannes Film Festival.



Cate Blanchette. In a word: stunning. Step aside kiddies, Cate is the epitome of red-carpet glam in this peachy confection by Armani Prive. The color perfectly accents her glowy complexion, and the one-shoulder look is so on trend. At the risk of sounding horribly cheesy, (and throwing in a ‘70s pop reference) heaven must be missing an angel.

Natalie Portman is one of those rare creatures with an innate sense of style. The fact that she is completely tuned in to what works for her bodyline is a refreshing change from most stylist-employing starlets (Mischa Barton we’re talking to you). The cobalt blue is so of-the-moment and I love that a petite girl can pull off a full-on ruffle look that doesn’t swallow her whole like this.

Gwyneth Paltrow. I have mixed feelings about this dress. I love the body-skimming silk in an inky shade, but I’m a little on the fence about all of those bows. Still, it’s Chanel, the silhouette definitely suits her, and the accessories are fab – especially those Roger Vivier heels so I’d still call this a “do.”

Red Carpet Don't

By now everyone who cares about SATC has already seen this pic. And nope, I'm not going to start with that Philip Treacy chapeau -- it's just low hanging fruit as far as I'm concerned.

What I do find disturbing about this ensemble is it's disjointedness. Matcy-matchy but then again, not so much. Look closely at the sweetheart neckline and you'll see tiny feathers that match that car wreck propped up on top of her head. Never mind that the color is baby snot green - scan down to Ms. Parker's shoes. Those peep toe pumps are just so wrong. One can only assume that SJP suffered a major wardrobe malfunction en route and had to fish out these clunky pumps from her assistant's tote.

Really, a pair of strappy metallic Manolos or Jimmy Choos would have saved this look.

This is the stuff of fashion don't history. Hope the movie doesn't disappoint as much.

Two Pretty Ladies - Two Unfortunate Looks

I always look forward to the Met's Costume Institute Gala, it's sort of like New York's Oscars, yet (delightfully) 100% Joan & Melissa-free. That's not to say that the red carpet didn't have its awkward moments.

Although Katie Holmes had fun with the "Superhero" theme this ensemble is One. Hot. Mess. Armani or not, it's just wrong on so many levels. The color, sequins, electric blue shoes, gold chains, and cakey tranny makeup - someone please make her stop, it's just too much '80s excess for the normally elegantly clad Holmes.

On the flip side is Eva Longoria in a stunning aubergine Marchesa gown. Thankfully Eva kept it classy with flattering hair and makeup and just a pop of sparkle with her dangly earrings but it still fell short IMHO. Why? The dress overwhelms her petite frame and is better suited for taller glamazons like Nicole Kidman or Cate Blanchett.

New York Street Beat: Beyond The LBD

The crime scene: très glamorous Cipriani’s 42nd St. The victims: Jessica Simpson and Deborah Norville. The perp: a Michael Kors gold leopard brocade dress. Tongues wagged recently when the gals showed up in the same gold sheath at the Accessories Council Awards Gala. We were front and center on the red carpet to watch the drama unfold. While the gossip rag paparazzi focused on the negative aspects of the fashion faux-pas, we have an entirely different spin: despite the naysayers, both women looked absolutely fabulous. Jessica rocked the look in a pair of black platform shoes of her own design; her trademark blonde locks framed her warm makeup to complete her sweet but sex kitten vibe. Deborah gave the dress a shot of old school chic in black tights and classic pumps; a pair of dangly earrings and a DIY handbag prevented it from looking dowdy and injected a bit of whimsy. We applaud both for not pulling a Clark Kent in the ladies room. Our fave red carpet must-have? Confidence!
